Part of a big move like this is being able to roll with changes, and we’re so adaptable we don’t even have to spell it right. We’re rolling with a big change now because Kelly just got offered a job! It’s a great job with a government agency doing something similar to what she does now, with lots of room to grow and learn new things. For one of us to find gainful employment before we arrive is huge because we can firm up a lot more things. We’ll know where we’re going to be living and know we’ll have a stable income so that we won’t just be bleeding money when we arrive.
So where is it we’ll be living? Wellington of course! It happens to be where I lived when I previously lived in New Zealand. Wellington is the capital of the country and located on the southern tip of the north island. It’s compact and hilly, known for its wind and for its cosmopolitonality (we’re so adaptable we can also make up words). The original plan was to arrive in Auckland and rent a place until we found jobs and knew which city we’d be living in. Now that we know we’ll be in Wellington we can center all of our planning on living there, but it means changing all of the plans that have already been made to be based in Auckland initially. We’ll have to change the reservation for the house we’ll stay at when we first arrive, cancel the quarantine reservation (and make a new one in Wellington) and get the pet import permit changed. We’ve also had to find a new temporary place to stay for a few weeks when we first get to Wellington, which shouldn’t be too hard until you factor in that it has to be a place that will allow a cat and a dog.
So the new plan is to arrive in Auckland, sightsee for a couple of days while taking care of some necessities such as picking up our bank cards (we’ll open an account before we arrive). We’ll also hopefully be able to buy a car in Auckland (there should be a little more selection) and then take a couple of days to drive down to Wellington. Kelly won’t have much time to relax between when we get there and when she starts work, but overall it’s a huge load off for one of us to have a job lined up and know where we’ll be living Absolutely, positively Wellington!
Hadn’t looked at your blog in several weeks and just saw the outstanding news about Kelly’s job–wow! Things really are falling into place. And that you’ll be in Wellington is lots better that being in Auckland indefinitely (see the online article yesterday about people pouring into Auckland?). I meant to ask if you know about the pohutukawa, the Kiwi Christmas tree–? Maybe one of the most beautiful trees I’ve ever seen . . . if you have never seen it growing/blooming, you can go to the botanic gardens in Wellington.
I want to hear about the job . . . make a point of telling me about it.
