Sadly berry season is just about over. Over the summer lots of fresh fruit appears. One of the first is cherries – where ever you go around town in December someone is selling bags of cherries from a table on the sidewalk or the boot of their car. Over the summer fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries, and veg like green beans and asparagus, start showing up in the stores. Fruit and veg is much more seasonal here – we found it a bit annoying at first since we were used to having anything we wanted available any time.
Now that we’re used to it, we’ve come to like it. You end up looking forward to different foods becoming available at different times of year, and really take advantage when they are. And because it’s local, it’s super tasty. Last time we visited the US we were excited to see some blackberries in the store even though it was the middle of winter, but it didn’t last long, because they were bland and tasteless.
So even though there’s some fruit and veg that’s available year round here like apples and grapes, a lot of it tends to be seasonal. And we’re on board with it now.
