The move

We were lucky that the owner of the house we were renting let us stay a little longer so that we had some overlap between houses. Our new house needed quite a bit of work which would have been difficult if we had to move in right away.

The big thing that had to be done before we moved in was to replace all of the plumbing. The house had a type of pipes that were prone to cracking, so the bank had placed a condition on the mortgage that the plumbing get replaced within three months of closing. Every wall in the house was covered with original 1980’s wallpaper, so I spent my nights after work steaming the wallpaper off the walls, then priming and painting.  We had the carpet in the bedrooms done as well.

I was able to get Hop’s room done before we moved in, and our bedroom soon after. The lounge (living room) got done too, but until after we’d moved in.

The move itself was pretty straightforward. We used a moving company and everything went just fine.

We also were planning to re-do the kitchen, including the flooring. The 40 year old carpet was faded and worn through to the sub floor in spots, but we figured we could deal with it for a few months until the kitchen was redone. That is until Kelly discovered carpet beetles under a section of it, munching away. Once we discovered those we ripped out the carpet and decided it was better to live on the bare sub floor for a little while.
