Voting

Well we voted. It was as easy as it seemed. This was a federal election so there were only two things to vote for – the party we prefer (seats in parliament are allocated according to the percent of the party vote each party gets. So if the Labour party gets 40% of the party votes, they get 40% of the representatives. The other vote is for your local member of parliament (MP). It doesn’t affect how seats are allocated, just who your local representative will be. So I voted at a place  a 5 minute walk from my office, Kelly voted in the school after Hop’s swim lesson,. And both of us were in and out in 5 minutes.

So now that election day has come and gone, we actually don’t know who won yet. Neither of the main parties won 50% of the seats, so neither one can form a government on their own. So there’s a few parties in negotiations now to see if they can form a coalition government, but it sounds like we probably won’t know which ones will get together and who will be in charge for at least another week,

In other news, spring is here and it;s starting to warm up, and happily, the days are getting longer, We’re still house hunting and actually put in our first offer a couple of weeks ago. We didn’t get it obviously, but I’ll give an update on how that works in another post. For now… Cheers!

  1. Hi–

I just caught up on the blogs–more than a year already?! Wow. Drew mentioned that in another year, you’d be eligible to apply for permanent residency. Does that mean you’re never coming back to the States or you’ll be Kiwis for an indefinite period or what? Let us know.

Along with most of the rest of the world, we’re still reeling from the shootings in LV . . . many questions and conclusions with no clear, realistic responses. Well-intended and well-educated people are often incredibly naïve. That said, all we can do is to pray for clarity.

Otherwise, we’re mostly fine , , , just returned from a wonderful trip to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton, Maine, etc. Also, I lost Kelly’s e-mail address (along with dozens of others). Please e-mail me.
