Breath = Caught

Now that our passports are in the mail, I figure maybe I’ll outline what we need to do over the next seven months.  The instinct is to get to NZ as fast as possible, but it’s nice to be able to move at our own pace.  Seven months seems like a long time but I’m sure it will fly by and now that we’ve started planning things out we realize it’s not as much time as we think.  So what do we need to do?  To start with, the big stuff:

  • Sell the house – this includes cleaning it out, getting it staged, and then the showings. It’s also likely that it will sell before we’re ready to go so it’s possible we’ll need to arrange accommodation for up to three months or so.
  • Arrange for the pets- get estimates for pet exporters, contact the vet and USDA to start the tests and shots the animals will need before they can get on a plane.  As we get closer we’ll need to arrange for quarantine once they get to NZ.
  • Get a crate – Get estimates to ship all of our belongings and choose a shipper. We’ll load up a 20ft crate which will go via ship to NZ.
  • And all of the other little stuff like selling our cars, going back East to for a wedding and to visit family, open a NZ bank account, arrange a place to stay in NZ when we arrive and a hundred other small things.

Now that we’ve caught our breath we can start the real work.
